The Lost Squadron’s six WWII P-38 Lightnings and two B-17 Flying Fortresses lie 265′ (25 stories) below the surface of the Greenland ice cap after the largest forced landing of military aircraft in history during the 1942 second and third flights of Operation Bolero. Paul Tibbets of Hiroshima/Enola Gay fame piloted the first flight’s B-17 Flying Fortress…Operation Bolero became the military’s solution to avoid aircraft losses due to the German U-Boat sinking of Allied supply ships carrying planes to the European war effort…The aircraft of the Lost Squadron were located by specialized ground penetrating radar in 1988 after 12 expeditions over 11 years
